Priorities
Not a wish list. These are the seven areas where a board member can actually move something, and where Cumberland County Schools needs it most.
Strengthen school security, build real partnerships with law enforcement, and take a proactive approach to safety rather than a reactive one.
Discipline matters. Every student and every teacher should be able to learn and work without wondering whether the expectations will be enforced today.
Back to fundamentals: strong reading, writing, mathematics, science, and critical thinking.
Everything else on this list exists to protect the hours in the day when teaching actually happens.
Expand apprenticeships, trades training, and workforce partnerships for students who aren’t headed to a four-year university.
Every student deserves a clear path — whether that path leads to college, military service, a trade, or a career. In this county, all four are real, and we should prepare kids for all four.
Transparency, open communication, and meaningful parental involvement.
In practice that means meetings families can actually attend, notice in plain English, and an answer when you ask a question. Families deserve a real seat at the table when decisions affect their children.
Teachers are our greatest investment. Improve retention with competitive compensation, real classroom resources, and less bureaucratic burden between them and their students.
Cumberland County Schools employs more than 6,600 people. Keeping good ones is cheaper than replacing them.
Invest in the programs that build leadership, discipline, teamwork, and school pride.
Sports, band, and clubs aren’t extras. For a lot of students they’re the reason school is worth showing up for. Attendance is an academic problem before it’s anything else.
Make sure funding goes directly toward classrooms, student success, and school safety.
The district is facing declining enrollment and a tight budget. That means hard choices — and it means looking at the administrative budget before looking at a building with kids in it.
On school closures

Enrollment is falling and the budget is under pressure, so these conversations are coming whether we like them or not. What I’ll commit to is this: before a closure is on the table, the community affected hears about it early and in plain language — not after the decision is made.
Three at-large seats are on the ballot November 3rd, and every Cumberland County voter gets to choose three.
